D.H. Peligro talks Turkey, movies and threesomes with Stefanie Spayd. Hubba-hubba. He's not just the drummer for the legendary Dead Kennedys. Oh, nooooo. This enjoyable fellow is a regular punk rock Renaissance Man--fronting his own band Peligro, starting Dirrty Records, writing an autobiography, filming a movie...he's even recently been approached by "The Jimmy Kimmel Show." He's also animated, charming, and dead sexy. What follows is the CREAM of our conversation. CIRCLE: So, you just got back from Turkey playing with Dead Kennedys. What was it like? PELIGRO: Turkey was, oh WOW...it was a veritable cornucopia of a cultural experience. You got the Muslim side, the Asian side, and the European side. And how they coexist, I don't KNOW. But it seems to kind of work over there. Aside from just doing the gig, we checked out some of the mausoleums, the Blue Mosque, and this 1600-year old church...I was kind of speechless. It was IN-SANE. CIRCLE: What was the crowd like when you played? Did they know Dead Kennedys? PELIGRO: They were just WILD, they were incredible. That was the first big rock concert EVER in Turkey. This was a 2-day festival with the Del Fuegos, The Cardigans, Simple Minds, Pet Shop Boys... CIRCLE: Oh, wow! PELIGRO: Yeah, it was like, "How did we get in this mix?!" CIRCLE: Heh. Hey, did you go to a Turkish prison? PELIGRO: (laughing) You know, NO, I did
not do NONE of THAT. I was NOT trying to go there. American prisons
are bad ENOUGH, right? But, I'll try to do that next time.
CIRCLE: Do you miss drumming while you're fronting Peligro, since you play guitar and sing? PELIGRO: Uhhh, not as much because it keeps you very busy, and over time I just become more geared to becoming a frontman. So it kind of fits me...after doing it for a while it's like, "Oh, I gotta take a back seat to playing drums." Which is my forte anyway. I LOOOVE playing drums. I love being a drummer. It's pretty powerful being the person that holds the band together. But you gotta be centered. CIRCLE: Gimme the best drummer joke you've ever heard. PELIGRO: Uhhh... (laughing) I don't know that many...What do you call a drummer with no girlfriend? CIRCLE & PELIGRO: (in unison) HOMELESS! PELIGRO: You got some more? CIRCLE: What do Ginger Baker and 7-11 coffee have in common? PELIGRO: They're both outta time? CIRCLE: They both suck without Cream. PELIGRO: (laughing) OH! Ahhh, that's funny! CIRCLE: Yeah... PELIGRO: I'm also going to be writing a book! CIRCLE: Oh, really? PELIGRO: The Autobiography of D. H. Peligro. The ups and downs, the trials, the mishaps, the BOTTOM, and the rise to the top--well, not the TOP, but...the rise and fall and the struggle back up again. And I'm supposed to be doing a film called "The Four Horsemen"...after the 1st of the year we'll start filming that. CIRCLE: How did that come about, you doing a movie? PELIGRO: Just kind of hangin' in Hollywood for a while. It just kind of got offered to me. I did a couple of little short films with some art students, and I don't know if that helped or got around somehow, but it became a vibe. People always say that to me: "You look like an actor. I always thought you'd be an actor, not a drummer." It's like, "Errr, ooookay." There's some talk to be being some "man on the street" on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. CIRCLE: Really? PELIGRO: Yeah! They could be calling any day, I don't know... CIRCLE: What are your all-time favorite movies? PELIGRO: I love "The Matrix" and all that knucklehead shit..."Saving Private Ryan" was actually very instrumental in me writing a song called "Unholy Visions Of War" (which we shortened to "Unholy") on the new record that's coming out. That was one of my favorite movies. I liked "Windtalkers"...I loved "Pulp Fiction." CIRCLE: Oh yeah, me too. What was the first concert you ever saw? PELIGRO: When I was a child, my brother, like, stole some tickets from this one dude and we went to the Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis and saw Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. CIRCLE: Was it good? Do you remember? PELIGRO: Yeah, I had never seen anything like that...the LIGHTS, the SOUND, it was so BIG, I was like, *gasp!* And I was already starting to play drums, and it was just COLOSSAL and MASSIVE. I could barely speak! And there were people smokin' weed and doin' their thing, and I was just like, "Look at this power! Look at all these people! Look at those DRUMS!" I was just taken in. CIRCLE: That guy did have a crazy drum set-up, didn't he? PELIGRO: Yeah, he had a GONG and just TOMS EVERYWHERE, like, WOW...and then it was just on to see Kiss and Black Sabbath...then I just went to concerts all the time. CIRCLE: Have you been to any good shows lately? PELIGRO: One of the last shows I saw that I really liked was Rammstein. (We both say "Rammstein" in thick German accents a few times for good measure) Black Flag just played here...it was not that good. CIRCLE: Oh... PELIGRO: Shhhhhh! CIRCLE: Hmmmm... PELIGRO: I KNOW you're gonna put that in your thing...well it WASN'T good. I don't give a FUCK, I said it! CIRCLE: I'm putting that right in there, man, in big bold letters: IT WASN'T VERY GOOD. PELIGRO: (laughing) Yeah, well, the truth kind of slipped out there. But they know that. I'm sure they do. If they don't, they will. CIRCLE: But no, tell me how you really feel. PELIGRO: Oh, okay, I was holding back. CIRCLE: What was the worst job you ever had? PELIGRO: Delivering pizzas in San Francisco when I didn't know the city at ALL...people would get their pizza HOURS late. Construction when I didn't know how to DO construction...and painting houses on swing stages was pretty bad, but I kind of liked it. CIRCLE: I have one final question...how much would my editor and I have to pay you to have a threesome with us? PELIGRO: Oooooohhhh, uhhhhh, I'll do it for NOTHING, Stefanie!!!! CIRCLE: Tee-hee (half- nervous, half-flirty) PELIGRO: What time do I have to be there, Stefanie? CIRCLE: Um, how's tomorrow? PELIGRO: Okay, let me go down to the airport and get my ticket... |
