PELIGRO WINS ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Best known as a member/songwriter in the legendary punk quartet the Dead Kennedys, rocker D.H. Peligro wins Rock Album of the Year at the 1st annual American Independent Music Awards for his album Sum of our Surroundings.
"As an artist you make the music and have no expectations," says Peligro.
"Getting the nomination and actually winning lets you know that someone appreciates your music and it's not all in vain."
Recently nominated to receive a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame and scheduled to star in the action movie The Four Horsemen, D.H. Peligro, who is the front man of the menacing rock group simply known as Peligro, won the prestigious award based on creativity, originality and artistry.
"I have music that has never been heard by anyone other than my self," says the rocker." Making this record I hoped a few people would listen to it like friends, peers, and family but this is truly an honor."
Often referred to as The King of Afro Punk, D.H. Peligro is a former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nailbomb. This St. Louis native took a machete to the music world and carved a path so uniquely his own that he's influenced some of today's popular punksters like No Doubt and Offspring.
At the age of 17, Peligro left St. Louis for San Francisco. After seeing an ad for a replacement drummer in a then unknown punk band called the Dead Kennedys, Peligro auditioned. He immediately impressed the band with his hardcore drumming and was asked to join.
Peligro's aggressive pounding helped make the Dead Kennedys the most legitimate bridge between 70's punk and 80's hardcore. Their huge popularity in England introduced many aspects of American hardcore to the British. Their LP Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables went gold and their single Too Drunk to Fuck became one of Britain's top 40 singles. The Dead Kennedys went on to release a number of hits including Plastic Surgery Disasters, Frankenchrist, Bedtime for Democracy, Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death and Mutiny on the Bay.
When asked how it feels to have such a great musical impact on so many people Peligro responds " It's mind blowing. While touring with the Dead Kennedys I would see kids worldwide singing along to our songs and sporting their Dead Kennedys t-shirts. It shows how much love they have for us after all these years."
